Is Marketing Really That Important ?
Everyone has heard the saying:
The best advertising is word of mouth advertising...
Hey, I have said it myself, but what if your company isn't growing and you are relying on word of mouth advertising?
Nobody controls word of mouth advertising. The results come along from time to time, but you just can't count on it to pay business bills or to cover payroll.
Years ago I was a newly hired CFO of a local manufacturing company. Back in those days there wasn't such a thing as the internet or digital based marketing.
TV, Radio, Newspapers and The Yellow Pages were in their prime.
Our Company used another marketing technique to get MORE sales. We hired outside sales reps and we employed internal sales people.
I was shocked to find that we spent between 25 and 30 cents on every dollar on our marketing budget.
The crazy thing was that it worked. The first year that I was there we went from $1 Million in annual sales to around $5 Million.
Year 2 - We hit $12 Million
Year 3 - We hit $25 Million
Year 4 - Over $50 Million
Year 5 - Over $60 Million
Year 6 - More than $70 Million
We went from 40 employees to over 670
in those 6 years.
While I was there I was a young
Accountant and I initially felt like we were
wasting money on sales and marketing.
BUT I was wrong.
The $200 Million in annual sales would not have happened unless we had an aggressive marketing plan.
There were some mismanaged budgets, overspending and errors of course, but we wouldn't have grown or had this tremendous success with word of mouth methods alone.
NOT EVEN CLOSE.
During that time we probably spent in excess of $40 Million on our various marketing strategies.
WOW!
What am I saying?
To get MORE, you have to do more!
Marketing and Sales IS the way to growth.
In today's world, you don't necessarily have to have the best products or services... but you do have to be found on the internet. That's what digital marketing is all about. Using the power of the internet to increase sales and profits.
Do some Digital Marketing.
Do you have to spend $40 Million? Of course not. I'm just saying that many businesses would do much better with an adequate, reasonable and well managed digital marketing budget.
Just include it in your overall budget just like labor, materials and other operating costs.
It is the life blood of every company.
Today we have digital marketing, Things like websites and search engine optimization(SEO) and online advertising.
Internet marketing isn't the only form of marketing, but to survive and thrive, most businesses need to be dedicated to the internet and how this type of marketing works.
So when did I get so interested in marketing and sales?
Easy
It was when I first became a business owner.
FEAR
I had the fear of not having cash flow.
I had the fear of missing payroll.
I realized I couldn't just hang
a shingle out and wait for the phone to ring.
I came to know that marketing is
where the fresh green money comes from.
Just like planting a seed. If you do it right it will grow.
Nothing is more ridiculous than to expect a plant to grow without the seed, sun, water etc.
